Penalties for Criminal Offenses in Indiana

Felony crimes in Indiana are classified into 6 levels. A level 6 felony is the least serious, while a level 1 is the most serious. The penalties for a level 6 felony can range from 6 months to 2 and a half years of imprisonment and fines of up to $10,000. Level 1 felonies carry sentences of 20 to 40 years of imprisonment and no more than $10,000 in fines. 

There are three classes of misdemeanor crimes in Indiana: “A,” “B,” and “C.” Class C misdemeanors are the lowest level offenses, and class A misdemeanors are the highest. While these crimes are less serious in the eyes of the law, their penalties are still significant. A conviction for a class C misdemeanor could come with a sentence of up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. For a class A misdemeanor, the penalties include up to a year in jail and a fine that could total $5,000.
